The Conservative Lesbian

Not every Gay person is a flaming liberal!

About the Conservative Lesbian

I am a fifty year old lesbian in a 15+ year committed relationship living in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. who [gasp!] has a generally conservative worldview and usually votes Republican. I grew up in a suburb of Portland, Oregon and I’ve worked for 23 years as a software developer in the D.C. metro area after leaving the U.S. Navy in 1985.

I came out to my parents in 1990 after dating a number of women, at which point they all but disowned me. I would not see them again for another seventeen years until last November, when we had a reunion.

I became a Christian at a young age and spent years reconciling my faith with being Gay. I finally came to the conclusion that God made me the way I am and that He loves me unconditionally.  We don’t currently attend church, but only because we can’t seem to find one that’s a good fit.

I met my spouse in 1992 and we’ve just celebrated our fifteen year anniversary of our commitment ceremony.  We live in a big house in the ‘burbs that we share with our six cats, two dogs, a cockatiel, and five fishtanks. We are also low-grade biker trash with three Harley-Davidsons between the two of us: An Electraglide, a Softail Deluxe, and a 1992 Electraglide Sport as a project bike.

I am a committed gun owner with a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit, and I fully believe in the 2nd Amendment as an individual right.  Quite frankly, I thought the recent Heller decision did not nearly go far enough.  I was really hoping for the repeal of the 1939 National Firearms Act, the 1968 Gun Control Act, and the Firearms Owner Protection (ha!) Act.

My hobbies include skewering weak-minded liberals on their absurd views based on faulty analysis and defective logic, saltwater fish, cooking, eating sushi, travel, and trains, and I started this blog because I think I have a unique perspective on the world worth sharing.

  1. I was once again doing a search on ‘conservative lesbian’… just in case I might stumble onto something new.
We seem to be a pretty small subset of the lesbian community. It was nice to find your website. I’m a 51 year old Christian lesbian from Washington state. I don’t have one single lesbian friend in this area with similar views. Nice gals…but all pretty liberal. Thanks for being visible.

  2. Hey! I thought my partner and I were alone, too. We are both former Marines, own Harleys, love our firearms, have a dog and three cats and live in NoVA as well. We have been together for 16 years and are in our early 40′s. We are also pretty much shunned by the GLBT community for our very conservative views. It’s nice to know there are other conservative lesbians out there.

  3. Well dang, I don’t have a Harley. But I do have all seasons of Xena on dvd. So… I’m thinking that should make me an honorory biker chick.

  5. Hello, wow…just wow…I just spent nearly an hour reading your posts and i’m so glad that i’m not alone. I’m 24 years old, college student at NYU, and a proud conservative, but i’ve been in a committed relationship with my girlfriend for nearly 2 years. ( we’ve been friends for a year before we became exclusive) And i have been looking around the net to see if i was truely alone. I’m actually pretty shocked that america would vote in such a radical liberal such as Obama. I was born and raised in Israel, in a pretty conservative family and moved to the states for an american education, and decided to stay. I feel that who i love should have no barings on my political and world views. I’m so happy i’m not alone. I shall be a faithful reader of your blog for now on!

  9. Holy Cow!
After discovering your site, I thought I was looking in a proverbial mirror! The only difference noticable was instead of me being a Hog afficionado, I have been an avid fly fisherman and fly tyer since 1970 when I was ten.
I look forward to more incite on the world, through your conservative lesbian eyes! You have inspired me to begin devoping a future website for “single conservative lesbians.” Imagine that!
Keep up the good work! ~Best Regards~

Hey, thanks for the kind words! We (conservative lesbians) are out here – see? You are not alone!

  11. Being openly lesbian has to be easier than being an openly conservative lesbian…I admire your courage to take responsibility for your life and not allow anyone to put you in a box. I’m so sick of the left putting us all in neat little categories and crucifying those of us who refuse to stay there. Women, blacks, gays and other minorities are treated like crap by the left if we don’t fit the leftist mold of what we’re supposed to be. I am an openly conservative, patriotic woman and damn proud of it. I love guns, freedom, my country and my God. I don’t care what you do in your personal life as long as it doesn’t infringe on my life and I will always seek to preserve your freedoms as though they were my own. It’s time we conservatives stuck together to overthrow the socialists who’ve taken over our country.

    CL replies:

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement, Dana!

    • Dana, you are an inspiration to fifty year old conservative lesbians like me. Your views are right on and I would encourage you to share them with the world whenever possible. I too am sick and tired of the “left” pushing their rhetoric and puppet-like brainwashing beliefs on those of us who know exactly who we are and what we stand for. I am personally no different than the true blue Americans that enjoy living in all the freedoms of the U.S.A. Keep up the lesbian conservative faith.

Funny, i feel the same way. That’s why I think I should be able to marry who I choose and control the number of children I have if that person is a sperm carrier and I happen to be a uterus-person. Unlike Santorum or Romney.

  12. Hey there. Wondered if you’ll be at the Restoring Honor rally in Washington DC on August 28th? Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck are the featured speakers. I’m going and it would be great to know there are other conservative lesbians in attendance.

    CL replies:

I hadn’t really planned to be there. Are you a local area resident or traveling from out of town?

  13. The comments I’ve read above are very interesting. I see people are saying that they got tired of the ‘left’ and their ‘brainwashing’, and defining us all to a liberal box. I agree, but don’t you think the ‘right’ is doing the same thing? After all, how can someone who is conservative, continuously try to bring big government into all of our lives in an attempt to limit the people’s rights? That’s the problem with strict conservatives and liberals, you guys are too extreme and accommodating to political parties, rather than to the unification of all Americans. A great example is how Liberals and Conservative constantly make Ad Hominem attacks against each other.

And just to be clear, I love my guns, my God, my country, small government, national prosperity, and my freedom just like the rest of you. But the evidence that the republican and democratic parties exist, solely with the specific purpose of dividing the people is incontrovertible. Even though I’m a moderate non-partisan (while leaning a little more towards the right), I’m glad to see that there are conservative lgbt folks who are not afraid to adhere to their views. But if we as the gay community want to move forward, then we must stop letting these immaterial political affiliations divide us. Look what it’s done to America. Let us lead by example.

My partner and I are also conservative lesbians from northern VA, seems we are a pretty rare bunch, we tend not to talk politics when we are among friends, thank God for family, we also appreciate and respect the military, that also does not go over well with most of our friends, don’t get me started on firearms,

  15. You most certainly have a dysfunctional relationship with one or both of your parents.

CL replies: Jeez, Andrew, do ya think? They all but disowned me for over a decade! I will say, however, that despite some very hurtful things that were said to me, I always stuck to the high road – I never did the “Oh yeah? Go screw yourself” response to them. I was always respectful of the fact they were my parents, and I never said anything I’d later regret.

  16. Conservative and Lesbian? Oxymoron? Aren’t we (they) all screaming Liberals? I think I’m the only one (of two) conservative lesbians that live in California. A (straight)friend just found your site
and sent to me. I’m sending it along to other conservative Lesbians I know spread out in other states. We need some sanity in this ever-changing world. I’m looking forward to getting to know
    this site. Any suggestions?

    • So my partner and I aren’t alone in CA? I am sickened by the notion that since I’m gay, I have to be a Democrat!!! WTF??? You and I are very lucky to have found a conservative half that loves us dearly, esp. in CA. This Nation has so much to offer to it’s citizens, but you just have to work for it. I have a sense of pride knowing that I have worked my tail off for what I have. I believe that a lot of the US has lost touch with this idea of pride, a sense of being a productive member of society. It’s disgusting knowing that people assume we are liberal because of who we love. If they can only open their eyes and see what is happening!!! I love my life, Country, and God, so get out of my life leftist socialists!!!

  17. Dear CL: I just stumbled over her, and I’m wondering — really, wondering — how you can feel comfortable with a group of people many of whom have voted for a guy who has compared your relationship to that of a human with a canine. This is not made-up stuff. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/05/rick-santorum-homosexuality-man-on-dog_n_1187103.html
It’s terrible and it’s sick and it’s just plain wrong. Why aren’t you angry about that?

    CL replies:

First, let me say that I am comfortable with very few politicians. Read my post entitled, “Demoblican or Republimat?”, to gain some insight into what I really believe. That said, one of my guiding beliefs is that the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution is the one that ensures the remainder of our rights are not abbrogated by an overzealous government. Therefore, I generally will vote for the candidate most likely to preserve (if not extend) that right. Why? I’d rather be a live lesbian able to defend herself even though I still don’t have the right to marry the love of my life, than a dead, disarmed, married lesbian. Gun control is nothing more than the misguided notion that it’s morally superior for a woman to be found dead and raped in an alley, strangled with her own pantyhose, than to be alive and standing over the bullet-riddled body of her attacker. Do not kid yourself, either, about the current administration. They have made repeated statements about their intention to impose more gun control legislation. Just sayin’.

    • Ok, I see where your priorities are. The facts regarding Obama and gun control are that
      1. The NRA hyped fear over Obama’s intentions to drive gun sales. http://www.factcheck.org/2008/09/nra-targets-obama/
      2. This fear mongering sold a lot of guns. Via: Ammo.net
      3. Obama as President has been pro-fun-ownership on many issues:http://mediamatters.org/research/201103170004
      Feel manipulated yet?

First, this post was automatically tagged as spam. I found it based on your follow-up remarks and posted it. I do not censor replies on this blog unless they are obscene or completely inappropriate.

I read, in detail, each source you provided. For you to conclude that Obama’s record has been badly represented and that he is actually pro-2nd Amendment simply reveals your complete ignorance on the topic. Try reading my post, “The Second Amendment, The Most Inconvenient Truth Of All” for openers.

There is another truth at work here, too: Gun control is political poison. More and more Americans are demanding their 2A rights and, in the wake of the backlash from the thankfully-expired Assault Weapons Ban, almost everyone in Congress who voted for the AWB was dumped in the next election.

Don’t for two seconds believe that the proponents of the Armor Piercing Ammo Ban, which absolutely would have banned virtually all huinting ammo by virtue of the fact that same ammo could be used in tens of thousand of single shot hunting pistols, was “unintentional”. These people retain highly-qualified experts who know EXACTLY what they are doing.

The fact that Obama signed legislation that allowed guns into National Parks was simply political expediency, not “support” in any sense of the word.

The 2nd Amendment isn’t about hunting, sportmanship, or self-defense. It’s about the people (that’s you and me) having the power over the governement, not vice versa.

        Comment by conservativelesbian | February 24, 2012

    • Ok well for some reason the post I left last night detailing the way gun salespeople have manipulated public opinion regarding Obama’s position on gun control to sell more guns wasn’t something you wanted to leave up. Obama doesn’t want your guns. The link I left last night shoes exactly how he has in fact increased American’s gun-carrying rights. He did increase job opportunities for gay people by thousands and thousands of jobs by ending DADT. So, stand with the people who would tell you lies to get you to vote against your own right to life a free and unashamed life, or the guy who thinks you’re just as strong and capable as any other American citizen.

  18. I also just wanted to post that I am glad I found your blog. My girlfriend and I are in the minority here, we live just outside the Portland (OR) metro area. I was deployed last year and had someone asking how could I as a lesbian serve in the military. My family is all very liberal, and my brother asked what kind of lesbian would vote for George Bush, “the one that is also in the military”. I am just glad that I found someone who shares my views with me so we don’t have to argue politics at home.

Dusti, thank you for your service! Serving my country in the Navy for almost eight years is something I am very proud to have done. As for your family, well, maybe someday they’ll see the truth: Conservatives believe in freedom, and liberals want the government to control everything.

Where in the Portland area are you from? I grew up in Milwaukie not far from the Bomber Gas Station, and my parents still live there. I left Oregon in 1978 and haven’t lived there since (too much rain!), but Portland is a beautiful city with lots of charm!

  19. I don’t understand the Left-Wing hatred of Sarah Palin.
Has the Democratic American forgotten what it means
to be an American? Are their heads so far up their asses
they are left in the dark? I viewed an incredible documentary
tonight on REELZ, titled ‘The Undefeated’. It was simply about
a head-strong Sarah Palin who did the right thing as Governor.
I truly believe, in this day and age, the Democratic Party may
despise our forefathers and what the United States ireally
stands for. I serious think they have probably never read
The Declaration of Independence. Perhaps if they did,
they would realize what the United Stated really represents.
The trailor of ‘The Undefeated’ can be found on –

Good Luck Sarah and have a great life!
