Message To Pelosi: Who Are You And What Have You Done With The Real Nancy?
Hell must have just frozen over. Really. Because Nancy Pelosi has just stated she’s not interested in new gun control laws.
Here’s how it went down:
In a speech on Wednesday, Eric Holder said, “As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” noting that it would “have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum,” implying that Mexicans come to the U.S. to buy automatic weapons and hand grenades at the local Wal*Mart. Riiiiight.
Well, this isn’t news. But what IS news is Nancy Pelosi’s response during her weekly news conference yesterday, when asked to comment on Holder’s speech. She indicated that Holder had not spoken to her, and went on to say, “On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said. “I think it’s clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”
Though a clear dig at the former president, “enforce the laws we have now” is a known code phrase for “no new gun control”. This coming from from Nancy Pelosi ? You have got to be kidding me!
Anyone know where I can get a cheap pair of ice skates?
The So-Called “Fairness Doctrine” Make Its Ugly Return
Question: What has thinner skin than an overripe pear?
Answer: A liberal
I swear these people just can’t take any criticism!
They can dish it out, that’s for sure. The media had a heyday with Bush: You couldn’t go a single day without some major media outlet interviewing a darling of the left railing against Bush policies, if not just outright calling him stupid. Comics skewer Republicans seven times more often than Democrats. And they crowed from the rooftops about how Sarah Palin was a redneck idot.
Yep, liberals dominate the media, with one exception – talk radio. Rush Limbaugh and other conservatives have this tiny little segment of the media almost all to themselves. But not if some Dems get their way.
The Fairness Doctrine, an FCC policy that required broadcast stations to provide opposing views on controversial issues of public importance, was introduced in 1949 and abolished in 1987. Fox News and others are reporting that Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., is expecting hearings to begin soon to consider reviving the policy. Why? Allegedly, to boost more liberal radio programming.
But consider this: If there were a market for such programs, wouldn’t they already exist?
The real intent would be to limit the number of wildly popular conservative shows. Because broadcasters couldn’t afford to air enough dead-air liberal programming to offset the popular conservative shows, they would simply have to cut back. Can you spell C-E-N-S-O-R-S-H-I-P ?
For a party who would go to the mat to defend publically funded pornography (remember Robert Mapplethorpe?) in the name of free speech, this seems a bit *ahem* hypocritic to me.
Oh, don’t get me wrong – I’m no real fan of some of these folks. Janet Paschal, for instance, advocates declaring homosexuality a mental illness and revoking the security clearances of all Gay Federal employees and contractors. But let me be clear: I absolutely do not agree with her, but I would go the distance to defend her right to say it. On the radio. As often as she wants to.
So You Want To Make Your Own Sushi?
Do you have the desire to make your own sushi, but don’t know where to find the ingredients or how to do it? Here’s a list of Northern Virginia sushi supplies and classes:
Sashimi grade fish
Grand Mart
6255 Little River Turnpike
Alexandria, Virginia 22312
Grand Mart is a large and well stocked ethnic market that routinely has sashimi grade ahi tuna (maguro), the occasional yellowtail (hamachi), premarinated mackeral (saba), prepared shrimp (abi), flying fish roe (tobiko), sheets of nori, and, of course, rice.
Super Q Mart
16593 River Ridge Blvd
Woodbridge, VA 22191
I didn’t even know this place existed until last month! Super Q Mart occupies a former Giant Food location, and yowza, this place is both huge and amazing! Pretty much everything offered at Grand Mart is available at Super Q Mart, though they seem to routinely have hamachi here.
Update! The new Manassas Super Q Mart is now open at their new location at the intersection of Liberia Ave and Prince William Parkway!
Sushi classes:
Sushi making classes are occasionally taught at Sur La Table at Pentagon City. The sushi class is hands on and teaches basic sushi rice preparation, maki rollmaking, and handroll preparation. Cutting fish and forming nigiri was not taught in the class we attended about a year ago. Here is a link to their class schedule.
Obi Sushi in Reston Town Center is rumored to conduct sushi classes. You can call them at 703-766-7874 or visit them at www.obisushi.com.
Helen Beyer teaches a “sushi gourmet” class for $39 per person. I am unsure if this is a hands-on preparation class, but you can reach her at 703-250-4565 to find out more.
Mary Moore does small group lessons or parties (she’ll bring everything you need). She is a marvelous woman who grew up in Taiwan under Japanese occupation, and teaches a fun and informative class (she was our instructor at Sur La Table, so I have firsthand knowledge). You can reach her at 703-680-1346 or email at marymoore@verizon.net.
Michael Steele: Get Ready, Baby. It’s Time To Turn It On!
Michael Steele, in the opening move to reshape the party, has dismissed the entire staff of the Republican National Committee, FOX News has confirmed.
Says Michael, “It’s time for something completely different, and we’re gonna bring it to them.”
It’s hard to see this as a bad thing, considering the overwhelming congressional majority is Democratic.
Mike, I am with you all the way: Time for some new blood, new ideas, and new faces!
Mommy, Why Did You Kill Me?
I am shocked, horrified, and outraged! Eighteen year old Sycloria Williams was 23 weeks along and decided she wanted an abortion. She went to a series of clinics and was given medication to start the procedure. The next day, the “doctor” still hadn’t shown up, and she started to go into labor, delivering a live baby girl.
The owner of the clinic, one Belkis Gonzalez (who has no medical license), cut the umbilical cord and knocked the live, breathing infant to the ground where she bled to death through the untied cord. Gonzalez then put the baby’s body and placenta into a biohazard bag and threw it into the trash.
Are you ready to puke yet? I am.
I want this clinic closed. I want medical licenses revoked. And I want murder charges.
This was not a non-viable mass of tissue, this was a baby. A living, breathing child. A life, goddammit! And Belkis Gonzales dumped her onto the floor, watched her bleed out, and tossed her into the trash. I am sick even thinking about it.
This piece of human crap, cheap excuse for a bag of flesh “clinic owner” should face prison time. Florida state attorneys are considered homicide charges, but haven’t reached a decision. Frankly, I don’t see what’s to think about.
Read about it for yourself here.
Lesbian Divorce: At Least They Have Some Legal Protections
One of the couples that led the charge for equal marriage in Massachussets are divorcing. Legally. This is both bad news and good news.
It’s bad news because I always hate to see any couple break up. Relationships these days seem so…. disposable. It’s as though no one really tries anymore.
But it’s good news because both parties now have some legal protections. Can you imagine owning a house, a couple of cars, maybe a vacation property or an RV, and trying to untangle that mess fairly? What if one partner put the other through school for years and then got dumped? Without the law, you are on your own to get what you can from the ex. With the law, there is some chance at fairness.
Julie and Hillary Goodridge: sorry about your breakup, but thank you for the laws you helped pass.
Michael Steele As Chairman of the RNC: Change We Can Believe In!
The GOP has clearly been in need of new leadership. Really. I mean, who, in their right mind actually thought that Mike Huckabee was electable? Losing control of congress to a Democratic majority didn’t just happen by itself, either. Quite frankly, the Republican party leadership has just been asleep at the switch, and Michael Steele is just the man who can help change all that.
Steele, you may recall, became one of two of the highest ranked African-American elected officials in the country when he took office as Lieutenant Governor of Maryland under Robert Erlich in 2003. In 2004, at the Republican National Convention, Steele gave the counterpoint to the Democrats’ Barack Obama in a keynote address, launching him onto the national political stage. The chairmanship of the RNC is just the latest step for Steele, who is gaining major political star power.
Steele’s ability to galvanize voters was evident in the 2002 Maryland gubernatorial campaign. Maryland, a traditionally Democratic state, got it’s first Repuplican governor in the twenty four years since Spiro Agnew left office in 1969. Pundits credited Steele for demonstrating to voters in the Free State that the Democratic Party doesn’t have a monopoly on inclusiveness. This fact has not been lost on the GOP leadership, and I think it’s long overdue.
You go, Michael! I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for us!
